1959

June 1—Drove to Dawson and inspected progress on construction of Church of the Holy Spirit. Conference with Mr. Jack buskin. Drove to Cordele for conference with the Rev. Van Opdenbrow. On to Savannah and conference with the Rev. Joseph Peacock.

June 2—At 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion.

June 3—Office work. Gave consent to election of a Bishop Coadjutor for North Carolina. Conference with Mr. Harry Nevels, one of our Postulants. Conference with Fr. Wooley, Fr. Pritchard, and Miss Emma Twiggs on the subject of Adult Education. In St. George’s Chapel I received 1 presented by the Rev. F. Bland Tucker for Christ Church, Savannah.

June 4—I learned of the death of the Rev. Charles Hibbard, retired priest of the Diocese. Took a plane to Chattanooga and bus to Sewanee. Inspected the new chapel and very impressed with it.

June 5—Assisted at the Holy Communion in St. Luke’s Chapel at which the Chancellor celebrated. Attended annual meeting of Board of Trustees of Sewanee. All Georgia trustees were present—the Rev. Chas. Schilling, Mr. Charles Jones, Jr., and Mr. Stewart Walker. The Rev. Charles Schilling was elected to the Board of Regents of the University. Attended annual meeting of the Red Ribbon Society and had the pleasure of assisting in the initiation of the Bishop of Atlanta. Attended the Vice Chancellor’s Reception.

June 6—Participated in conference of bishops with the faculty of the School of Theology. Attended Alumni Dinner and visited with Bishop Noland of Louisiana.

June 7—At 9 A.M. I attended consecration of St. Augustine’s Chapel given by the Diocese of Arkansas in thanksgiving for the Episcopate of Bishop Mitchell. Made my communion at this service. At 11 A.M. participated in the procession and service of dedication of All Saint’s Chapel occupying the stall appointed for the Bishop of Georgia. Heard the baccalaureate sermon preached by the Rev. Catesworth P. Lewis of Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Va.

June 8—Participated in Commencement academic procession and exercises in All Saint’s Chapel. Witnessed the bestowal of the Degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, on the Rev. Junius Martin of Christ Church, Frederica. Mr. Lawrence Alvarez of Christ Church, Valdosta received a B.S. degree cum laude.

June 9—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah. Office work. Conferences with Fr. Haynsworth, Fr. Wooley, and Col. desIslets.

June 10—Office work. At noon Mrs. Stuart and I. drove to Cordele and visited at the new vicarage of Christ Church with Mr. and Mrs. Lakeman and children. We saw construction proceeding on the new St. Jude’s Chapel. We drove to Americus.

June 11—At 10:30 on this Feast of SL. Barnabas we ordered Deacon Mr. Thomas Edmund Lakeman in Calvary Church, Americus. Fr. Bitch preached the sermon and Fr. Buttin presented the Candidate. It was gratifying to – have many of the diocesan clergy present. Attended luncheon for the new Deacon in the parish house. Conference for counselling. Mrs. Stuart and I drove to Albany and visited Fr. and Mrs. Daunt at the Rectory. Drove to Tifton. I had a conference with Vestry Committee of St. John’s, Moultrie. At 6 P.M. in St. Ann’s Church I confirmed 8 presented by the Rev. Vance Clark.

June 12—Office work. Conference with Mr. Malcolm MacLean, Acting Chancellor.

June 13—Mrs. Stuart and I drove to Augusta, I had a conference with some of the diocesan youth advisors and officers. Conference with the Rev. Gus Sheppard at St. Paul’s Church. I gave a press interview and made a sick call.

June 14—At 8 A.M. in St. Alban’s I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. At 9 A.M. I confirmed 23 and received 1 presented by Fr. Mead. I assisted Fr. Mead at the Celebration of the Holy Communion and preached. Mrs. Stuart and I participated in a very happy parish picnic of St. Alban’s at Camp Gravatt in South Carolina.

June 15—Mrs. Stuart and I drove to Denmark, S. C. and visited the Summer School of Religious Education for the Fourth Province. We were impressed with the fine group from Georgia attending the conference. I made an address to the school introduced by the Rev. Gustave Caution. It was a pleasure to meet Dr. Potts, President of the Voorhees School and Junior College. Fr. Mead of the Church in Georgia visited the school and took a picture of the Georgia delegation. Drove to Savannah in time to greet the Rev. and Mrs. James McConnell and fancily arriving in the Diocese to begin work in Dawson and Blakely and Cuthbert.

June 16—At 7 A.DI. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conference with the Rev. Ralph Banks, Fr. MacConnell, Mr. Dawson Teague, Jr., Col. desIslets, and the Rev. Bruce Wirtz. In St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House 1 confirmed 2 presented by the Rev. Ernest Risley.

June 17—Office work. Mr. Edward Morgan and I drove to Brunswick. Brief Conference with the Rev. Junius Martin. Attended opening of bids in St. Mark’s Parish House for construction of the Georgia Episcopal Conference Center. The firm of Watson S Yeargan of Jesup was low with a bid of $223,000. Conferred with Architect and Morgan and I drove home.

June 18—Office work. Luncheon conference with Mr. Hugh Hill, Diocesan Treasurer.

June 19—Office work. Counselled a member of one of our parishes and discussed a community problem with a citizen. I drove to Sylvania and spent the night.

June 20—I drove on to Augusta. At 10:30 A.M. in the Church of the Good Shepherd I ordained to the Diaconate Mr. Addison Dawson Teague, Jr. The Rev. Allen Clarkson presented the Candidate and the Rev. F. Bland Tucker preached the sermon. Attended an ordination luncheon.

June 21—Drove on to Chattanooga. Attended Morning Prayer and sermon in Thankful Memorial Church. Arrived in Sewanee for the Summer Training School and delighted to find a registration of over 250. Participated in opening service in All Saints Chapel of the Sewanee Summer Training School at which the Presiding Bishop was preacher. Delighted to see the Rev. John Ford, the Rev. John Kelly, and the Rev. Ben English and several Georgia people attending the Conference.

June 22—Participated in early Celebration of the Holy Communion in All Saints Chapel and began serving as Chaplain of the Conference, conducting the Bible Study Hour. Heard the lecture by Dr. Pierson Parker and the tape recording of C. S. Lewis lectures on Love. Attended a meeting of the Sewanee Summer Training School Board. Said Evening Prayer in All Saints Chapel and attended a lecture by the Rev. John M. ABia, Rector of All Saints College, Vicksburg, Miss.

June 23—Attended the Holy Communion at 7:15 A.M. in All Saints Chapel. Conducted Bible Study for the Conference and heard lecture by Dr. Pierson Parker of General Seminary and the tape-recorded C. S. Lewis lectures. Said Evening Prayer in All Saints Chapel and heard an address by the Bishop of Arkansas.

June 24—This being the Feast of St. John Baptist I Celebrated the Holy Communion in All Saints Chapel at 7:15 A.M. assisted by the Rev. John Kelly, the Rev. John Ford, and the Rev. James Adams. Conducted the Bible Study and attended Dr. Parker’s lecture on Gospel of St. John. Heard the tape-recorded C. S. Lewis lecture. Counselled in the afternoon.

June 25—At 7:15 A.M. I gave the instructions at a Guided Eucharist in All Saints Chapel celebrated by Fr. Dunstan of the Franciscan Order. Conducted Bible Study for the Conference and heard the lectures of Dr. Parker and Dr. C. S. Lewis. In the evening witnessed a presentation of “Murder in the Cathedral” in All Saints Chapel.

June 26—Participated in Celebration of the Holy Communion in All Saints Chapel. Conducted conference Bible Study and heard Dr. Parker’s final lecture. We drove toward North Carolina, spending the night in Elizabethton, Tenn.

June 27—North Carolina.

June 28—We attended service at Chapel of the Transfiguration, Kanuga. June 29—North Carolina.

June 30—North Carolina.

July 1—We drove from North Carolina to Savannah.

July 2—Office work. Conferences with Fr. Ball, Mr. Ballinger, member of a Mission, and the Rev. Holland Clark. Gave consent to the election of a second Suffragan Bishop of N. Y.

July 3—Office work. Conferences with Fr. Bassill and a young man interested in the ministry as a vocation. I confirmed 1 in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, presented by the Rev. W. B. Sams for St. Andrew’s, Darien.

July 4—Office work.

July 5—At 8 A.M. in St. Thomas, Isle of Hope, I celebrated the Holy Communion in the absence of the Rector on vacation. At 10 A.M. with the assistance of the Rev. Wm. Bassill and a fine congregation I dedicated the Church of All Saints at Savannah Beach and all of its appointments. I preached and celebrated the Holy Communion. The Chancellor and the Architect of the Church, Mr. Lyman Robertson of Augusta were present.

July 6—In Valdosta, had a conversation with Mr. Blake Ellis, Architect of our Conference Center. I drove on to St. Teresa, Florida. I visited Camp Weed, Florida diocesan conference center, for the first time and was taken on a tour of the property and inspection of the new construction by the Bishop of Florida.

July 9—Office work. Conference with Fr. Hatch and Fr. Fleming.

July 10—In the afternoon, I drove to Camp Mikell, Toccoa for a Retreat for the Women of the Diocese of Atlanta.

July 11—I celebrated the Holy Communion at 7:30 A.M. at Camp Mikell and gave the retreat addresses throughout the day.

July 12—I celebrated the Holy Communion at 7:30 A.M. at Camp Mikell ending the Retreat. At 10 A.M. Lay Readers said Morning Prayer and I preached in the Chapel of Camp Mikell. I drove to Athens. Had a conference with one of the students regarding the priesthood and saw briefly another possible Postulant. Drove to Savannah.

July 13—Office work. Conferences, long distance calls, meetings all day. Conference with the Deacon-in-charge of St. George’s Mission, Savannah and the Senior Warden; conferences with representatives of another Mission; conference with Mr. Blake Ellis. Attended meeting all afternoon of the Board of Governors and Architect of Georgia Diocesan Conference Center. We agreed to sign a contract for $210,000 for construction of the Center by Watson & Yeargan of Jesup. We hope the work can begin next week.

July 14—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conference with the Chancellor and the Treasurer of the Diocese. Conference with a deposed priest regarding restoration. Conference with a young man interested in the priesthood. Conference with members of a Mission congregation.

July 15—Office work. Conference with Mrs. Glazier. Conference with a college student regarding his vocation. Gave consent to the consecration of a Bishop Coadjutor of Central New York.

July 16—Office work. Visit with Fr. Bassill. He and I inspected the new vestments of the Holy Apostles and were shown the new vicarage by the Vicar. Conference with Miss Gartelmann. Conference on a marital problem. At 7 P.M. Mrs. Stuart and I were guests at a supper at St. Michael’s Church honoring the Rev. Pearson Hill Sloan on his retirement. The parish presented him with a handsome check and a watch. The vestry elected him Rector Emeritus as of his retirement. I made a brief address.

July 17—Office work. Made a hospital call. Visited the Rev. Dawson Teague and was pleased with the house St. George’s Mission has provided for him.

July 18—Office work. Spent the afternoon in the study at home.

July 19—Drove to Darien. At 10:30 in Sr. Andrew’s Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Vicar, confirmed 11 and received 1 presented by him and preached. Met briefly with the Vicar and Vestry. Enjoyed a shrimp and crab lunch in the Parish house with the congregation. Drove to Savannah. Mrs. Stuart and I went to Mission of Holy Apostles where the Vicar and I said Evening Prayer and I blessed the handsome new vicarage.

July 20—I spent the morning in the office, leaving in the afternoon for North Carolina.

July 26—At 11 A.M. 1. participated in Morning Prayer said by a Lay Reader in St. James Church, Hendersonville, N. C. and preached the sermon. Counselled on a marriage problem.

July 27—North Carolina.

July 28—I drove to Savannah. Spent several hours at night in the office with accumulated mail.

July 29—Office work. Gave consent to the election of Bishop Lewis as Coadjutor of Olympia, Lunch with Mr. Edu’. Morgan. Conference with Mr. Bruce Wirtz.

July, 30—Drove to Vidalia for short visit with Mr. Wirtz. Stopped in Cordele to see the Lakemans. Visited Fr. and Mrs. MacConnell in Dawson. Drove to Kolomoki State Park for the 1959 session of Camp Reese.

July 31—Camp Reese. August I—Camp Reese. August 2—Camp Reese.

August 3—Drove to Atlanta and caught plane to New York.

August 4—Flew from New York to Martha’s Vineyard for meeting of the Standing Liturgical Commission.

August 5—Standing Liturgical Commission.

August 6—Standing Liturgical Commission. Flew to Atlanta, picked up car and drove to Gainesville, Georgia to spend the night.

August 7—Drove to North Carolina for vacation for the rest of the month. September 7—We returned from North Carolina to Savannah.

September 8—Office work. Visits from Fathers Hatch, Ball and Gearhart. I gave Letter Dimissory dated Sept. 1, 1969 to the Rev. John L. Kelly to the Diocese of South Carolina.

September 9—Office work. At 10:30 A.M. in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz who presented 1 for Confirmation for the Church of the Annunciation, Vidalia. Conferences with Mr. Wirtz and Mr. George Kiker, Postulant.

September 10—Office work. Conference and lunch with the Rev. John Ford. At 5 P.M. attended meeting of the Board of the Episcopal Home for Girls. I accepted Letter Dimissory from the Bishop of Nassau for the Rev. James WacConnell.

September 11—Office work. Conference with Mr. Hugh Hill, Treasurer of the Diocese. With the Rev. Albert Hatch of the Church in Georgia drove to Camden County to see the construction on the new Camp and Conference Center. We met Mr. Blake Ellis, our architect, in Brunswick for lunch and drove to Honey Creek. The site has been cleared and the full beauty of it is revealed. The foundations of the buildings have been laid and work is progressing satisfactorily—it will be a wonderful center for the diocese and we give thanks we are approaching the realization of our long desired objective.

September 12—Office work. Conference with Senior Warden of a Mission. In the afternoon I drove to Thomson. Fr. Peacock and I had supper with members of Holy Cross, Thomson and Trinity, Harlem. I spent the night in Thomson.

September 13—At 9 A.M. in Trinity, Harlem, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Fr. Peacock. I preached. Fr. Peacock and I drove to Thomson. In the City Hall at 11:15 the Vicar celebrated the Holy Communion for the Mission of the Holy Cross. I assisted and preached. We are all looking forward to the beginning of construction of a building on the Mission property. I drove to Augusta and made several pastoral calls. At 8 P.M. the Rev. Allen Clarkson said Evening Prayer and presented 3 for Confirmation. I preached. Drove to Savannah.

September 14—Office work. Conference with the Chancellor. Visit from Fr. Huff. Met with the Deacons of the Diocese in the evening at Diocesan House and discussed diocesan and pastoral affairs.

September 15—At 7:30 A.M. in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, I celebrated the I-Ioly Communion for the Deacons of the Diocese and took them to breakfast afterwards. Attended a meeting of the diocesan Department of Promotion. Visited a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Diocese and introduced to them the Deacons and several young men asking to become Postulants. Conference with several of these men. In the afternoon attended session of the diocesan Clergy Conference at All Saint’s Church, Savannah Beach. Mrs. Stuart and I entertained diocesan clergy and their wives for supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Varnedoe at Savannah Beach.

September 16—At 7:15 A.M. in All Saints, Savannah Beach, I attended morning Prayer and celebrated the Holy Communion for the clergy of the Diocese assisted by Fr. Basslll and Fr. Shipps. Attended session of the Clergy Conference and heard a very interesting discussion by Rabbi Arthur Gilbert of New York. We all were luncheon guests of the ‘Women of All Saints Church, Savannah Beach. Conference with Fr. Battle. Drove to the office for a conference with a man considering a vocation to Holy Orders. I have this day admitted John Letris Jenkins, Jr. as a Candidate for Holy Orders.

September 17—Office work.

September 18—Office work. Conference with Fr. Hatch. In the evening Mrs. Stuart and I attended a reception given by St. George’s Mission for the Rev. and Mrs. Dawson Teague, Jr. We paid a call on Fr. and Mrs. Gearhart at the Rectory of St. Michael’s.

September 19—Office work. Conference with a student on a personal problem. Drove to Cordele and was guest of the Rev. and Mrs. Edmund Lakeman in the new Vicarage. Impressed with the Vicarage and thankful for it.

September 20—Mr. Lakoman and I got an early start and drove to Hawkinsville. At 8 A.M. in St. Phillip’s Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Mr. Lakeman and gave a brief instruction. A very good congregation present including Pastor of the A.F.M. Church. At 9 A.M. in St. Luke’s, Hawkinsville I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Mr. Lakeman and gave an instruction. Drove to Cordele. At 11 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Mr. Lakeman who presented 3 for Confirmation. I preached. Fine congregation and splendid spirit. The Church has been effectively redecorated inside. Drove to Vidalia and met with congregation of Annunciation regarding building plans. At 7:30 P.M. I used the service Blessing of a Home for the new Vicarage and attended an open house. Drove to Savannah.

September 21—Office work. Conferences with Mr. Porter Driscoll, and Mrs. John Varnedoe. We had a visit at Bishop’s House from Judge and Mrs. Howard McCaleb of New Orleans and Christ Church Cathedral.

September 22—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conference with the Chancellor and business at the bank with various financial problems. Office work. Visit from Fr. Bassill.

September 23—Left early and drove to Augusta. At 10:30 AM. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church assisted by the Rev. Chas. Schilling. This service opened the first meeting of a diocesan altar guild. I made an address to those present and later met with them on objectives and organization of the Guild. 11frs. Richard Weeks of Augusta is the first Chairman and there were present representatives of the Convocations and Mrs. Kraus, diocesan President of the Women of the Church. Confirmed 1 privately at St. Paul’s, Augusta, presented by the Rev. Chas Schilling. We had lunch in the Parish house. Had a conference briefly with Fr. Mead and drove to Savannah.

September 24—Office work. Conference with Fr. Hatch.

September 25—This being our wedding anniversary Mrs. Stuart• and I made our communion at 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s Church. Most of the morning spent at the bank with various financial operations. Conferences with Fr. Batch and Mr. Gaillard and other office work.

September 26—Office work in the morning. Conference with a young man interested in Holy Orders.

September 27—At 9:30 A.M. in the Library of Country Day School, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion for St. George’s Mission assisted by the Rev. Dawson Teague. I preached. A very good congregation in this newest Mission of the Diocese. At 11 A.M. in St. Michael’s Church, Savannah, I instituted the Rev. Kenneth M. Gearhart as Rector of the Parish assisted by the Wardens of the Parish, Mr. Tom Bradley, Jr. and Mr. Wilbur Holland, Jr. I preached and attended coffee hour. The Rev. Hill Sloan, Rector Emeritus was present. In the afternoon Airs. Stuart and I attended an open house at the new St. Michael’s Rectory.

September 28—Office work. At 10:30 A.M. in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, I confirmed 1 presented by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz for Good Shepherd, Swainsboro and received 1 presented by Fr. Ball for St. James, Pooler. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. George’s Chapel. Conference with Canon Harris and conference with \Ir. Spencer Connerat. Visit from Fr. Peacock on his way through town.

September 29—At 7 A.M., this being the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Savannah. The Rev. Edw. Havneworth, the Rev. Rim. Yon of the Diocese of Atlanta and I drove to Blackshear where we picked up the Rev. Joseph Peacock and drove to Camp Weed, Fla., for a Provincial Conference on Camps and Conferences. I presided at the opening session of the Conference as Chairman of the Provincial Department of Christian Education.

September 30—I celebrated the Holy Communion in the Chapel of Camp Weed for the Provincial Conference on Camps and Conferences. Attended sessions all day.

October 1—This being the 7th anniversary of the consecration of Bishop Nolan, Suffragan Bishop of Louisiana, he celebrated the Holy Communion and I assisted him in the Chapel of Camp Weed. I acted as Moderator of the concluding session of the Provincial Conference on Camps and Conferences. After lunch the Rev. Edw. Haynsworth, the Rev. Joseph Peacock, the Rev. Wm. Yon of the Diocese of Atlanta, and I drove from Florida to Savannah. We stopped briefly in Jesup and saw Fr. Fleming and the new Rectory under construction.

October 2—Office work.

October 3—I left early and drove to Augusta. At Christ Church I made an address to a fine meeting of the Youth Commission of the Diocese. This was the first time 1 had seen the splendid new Parish house of Christ Church in use. It meets a need of many years. I had lunch with the Young people and attended a session of the meeting under the fine leadership of Young

Wright, our President, and Fr. Peacock, our Senior Youth Advisor. I was delighted that John Rhee, Korean Student from Senanee, could be present. Our Young People have been assisting with his scholarship. Drove to Sylvania.

October 4—At 8 A.M. in the Community Center of Sylvania, I said Morning Prayer and preached for the Epiphany Mission. We have a few very faithful people in this Mission who maintain services twice a month in spite of all discouragements. Perhaps some day there will be a Church here. I drove to Statesboro. At 10 A.M. in Trinity Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. John R .Wooley, who presented 2 for Con. firmation and 1 to be received. I preached. Attended a coffee reception and met with the Vestry. Drove to Savannah.

October 5—I left early and drove to Augusta. At 10:30 A.M. in Christ Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. David Pritchard and attended the meeting of the Women of the Augusta Convocation, presided over by Mrs. Wilson Mason. Mrs. D. Lee Krauss, diocesan president was present. I made an address. Was gratified to see so many of the Augusta clergy present. Confirmed a patient in the hospital presented by the Rev. Allen Clarkson. Had lunch with the ladies and drove to Savannah.

October 6—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conference with the Rev. Edw. Driscoll, Executive Secretary of the Georgia Council of Churches. Spent a large part of the dap on the tclehone with various parts of the Diocese.

October 7—Visits to Court House and Bank on several matters. Office work. Presided at meeting of the Board of Officers of the Corporation. Conference with an architect at Bishop’s House regarding certain improvements.

October 8—Office work. Conference at some length with Mrs. Harper.

October 9—Office work. At 5 P.M. Mrs. Stuart and I met Fr. Turkington, Superior of the Order of the Holy Cross, and took him to be the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Tucker at the Rectory of Christ Church. We then drove towards Albany. Stopped for the night in Tifton, unable to proceed further.

October 10—We drove to Radium Springs. At 10 A.M. in St. Mark’s Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Harry Shipps who gave the instruction for a Guided Eucharist. This service opened the meeting of the Women of the Albany Convocation. Mrs. Julian Lay presided. I made a statement with reference to the diocesan Altar work and the Conference Center. With Fr. Battin I drove to St. Paul’s, Albany for an Acolytes Festival of the Convocation. Fr. hlacConnell celebrated the Eucharist and I preached. Had a picnic lunch with the boys in the Parish House. Conference with Fr. Daunt. Went back to St. Mark’s, Radium Springs, and spoke to the Women of the Convocation on Stewardship. Conference with Fr. Murphy of Florida. Confirmed 1 presented by the Rev. Harpy Shipps in St. Mark’s. Conference with Mr. Van Platter.

October 11—At 10 A.M. I attended the Church School of St. Andrew’s, Douglas and spoke briefly on Holy Baptism. Impressed with the need for greater classroom space to accommodate this fine school. Conference with Fr. Huff and Mr. Jack Martin. At 11 A.M. I witnessed an administration of Holy Baptism, confirmed 7 presented by the Vicar, celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by hire and preached. Following the service we moved to the new vicarage—a beautiful house and had the Blessing of a Home. The Huffs hope to move into it this week. Mrs. Stuart and I drove to Waycross. At grace Church I made an address to a fine gathering of the young people of the Convocation. We drove to Savannah and visited with Fr. Turkington, guest at Bishop’s House.

October 12—Conference with Fr. Turkington of the Holy Cross. Office work. Conference with Fr. Gearhart. Learned that the new car had arrived and with Isabelle went to see it. We hope it can take the Georgia highways the way the old one has for three years. Conference with Mrs. Mingledorff.

October 13—At 10 A.M. in the Church of the Holy Apostles, Savannah, I celebrated the holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Albert Hatch. This service opened the fall convocation of the Women of Savannah. Mrs. King Simkins presided and I made an address. Office work. Gave consent to the election of a Suffragan Bishop in Virginia. Traded the old 1956 Buick for a 1960 model for the Diocese. Hope this car holds up and gives as good service as its predecessor.

October 14—Office work. At 10:30 A.M. in St. George’s Chapel I celebrated the Holy Communion for the Executive Board of the Women of the Diocese. I attended some of the sessions of the Board as they met in Diocesan I-Iouse under the leadership of Mrs. D. Lee Krauss. Today I borrowed the first installment on a loan from the bank for the construction of the diocesan camp and conference center.

October 15—Conference on a marriage problem. Visit from Fr. Bassill. Conference with Fr. Worley. Lunch with the Rev. John Ford and the Rev. John Wooley. Attended lengthy meeting of the Division of Camps and Con. ferences to plan 1960 program at the new Conference Center.

October 16—Mrs. Stuart and I took the train to New York.

October 17—We arrived in Albany, N. Y., and were driven by bus to Cooperstown, N. Y. for the meeting of the House of Bishops. Attended opening session of the House.

October 18—Attended Corporate Communion of the Bishops at which the Presiding Bishop was the celebrant. Participated in a Quiet Day, led by Canon Wedel of the College of Preachers.

October 19—Attended early service and the sessions of the House. I presented for the approval of the House the revision of the Book of Offices proposed by the Standing Liturgical Commission.

October 20—This being the 5th Anniversary of my consecration, Mrs. Stuart and I made our Communion, the celebrant being Bishop Bayne of Olympia. In the afternoon we joined the Bishops at a tea given by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Clark.

October 21—At 7:30 AM. we assembled for the Holy Communion and election of Missionary bishops for Nevade and Santa Domingo. Sessions of the House followed. In the evening we were entertained at a banquet.

October 22—We left Cooperstown for New York city.

October 23—In New York city, conference with Sister Josephine and visit to “281.”

October 25—We went to service at 7 A.M. at St. Mary the Virgin

October 26—Arrived in Savannah in early morning. I-Iard work at the office catching up on correspondence. Had a conference with my doctor.

October 27—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah. Conference with the Chancellor. Attended a joint meeting of the Savannah and Waycross Convocations at Christ Church, Savannah. Lunch with the clergy at Christ Church. Office work all afternoon. Received notice that Fr. Murphy of Florida has accepted the call to St. John’s, Moultrie.

October 28—Office tvurk. Conference with reference to repair work on the Diocesan House. Conference with a couple seeking an ecclesiastical judgment under the marriage canon.

October 29—Office work. Another visit to the doctor. October 30—Office work.

October 31—I drove to the new Conference Center in Camden County. Fortunately the weather cleared and we had sunshine for the service of the Laying of the Cornerstone of the Chapel of Our Saviour in memory of Bishop Barnwell. A fine representation of the Diocese was present. Good progress is being made an the construction and the site is beautiful. Participating in the service were the Rev. Edward Haynsworth, the Rev. John Ford, the Rev. Talbert Morgan, the Board of Governors, the Chancellor, the Architect, MMrs, Krauss, Mr. Edwards, the Contractor, and Mr. Smith, Senator of the 4th District. Everyone had a picnic lunch. Mr. Blake Ellis and I visited the old Camp Reese site to check equipment.

November 1—At 8 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in the Church of the Holy Apostles assisted by the Vicar. At 11:15 A.M. in St. Matthew’s, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion, confirmed 13 presented by the Rev. Gustave Caution, and preached. Fr. Caution and I visited a home and confirmed privately an invalid. llrs. Stuart and I drove to Peeler. At 4:30 P.M. in St. James’ Mission the Rev. Porter Ball said Evening Prayer and presented 1 for Confirmation. I preached. Mrs. Stuart and I visited briefly the St. Michael’s silver tea. At 7:30 P.M. in the Holy Apostles I witnessed six baptisms by the Vicar, Confirmed 8 presented by Fr. Hatch, and preached.

November 2—Office work. Conference with Mr. Arthur Cody. Conference with Fr. Hatch regarding the Church in Georgia. Miss Agnes Jeter of Camp Yanahala is guest of Bishop’s House.

November 3—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conferences ivith Mr. Connerat, the Chancellor, and Dr. Tucker. Office work.

November 4—Office work. At 11 A.M. in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, I confirmed 1 presented privately by the Rev. F. Bland Tucker. Conference with the Chancellor. At 12:15 P.M. I made an address to the Women of St. John’s, Savannah. Conference with Air. Robert Martin.

November 7—Took the day off.

November 3—Mrs. Stuart and I drove to South Carolina. At 12 noon in Strawberry Chapel in Berkeley County I celebrated the Iloly Communion and preached.

November 9—We drove to North carolina and spent the day. In the late afternoon we drove to Greenville, S. C. At 8 P.M. in Christ Church Parish House, I presided at a meeting of the Provincial Department of Christian Education.

November 10—At 10 A.M. in Christ Church Parish House, Greenville, S. C., I attended a meeting of the Provincial Council of the Fourth Province. Attended opening session of the Provincial Synod and participated in a discussion of the Church’s Responsibility to the Aging. Clad to sec the clerical, lay, and women deputies from Georgia attending the Synod. At. tended provincial dinner and the Synod Service at which the Bishop of Pennsylvania was the preacher.

November 11—Attended the early celebration of the I-Ioly Communion for the Synod at Christ Church. Participated in Synod sessions until adjournment. Attended meeting of Provincial Council under the newly-elected President, the Bishop of South Florida.

November 12—Drove to Savannah. With the Chancellor I attended to the important matter at the bank of the loan for construction of the Camp and Conference Center. Passed by the office and brought accumulated mail home where I worked on it until late at night.

November 13—I took a plane at 6 A.M. to Atlanta. Met with planning group for the 1960 Sewanec Summer Training School at All Saint’s Church Parish House. Expected to take 1:30 P.M. plane to Savannah, but it turned out to be a 2:30 plane. Went directly to the office for a conference with Mr. Edward Jones of Albany.

November 14—Office work. In the afternoon I drove to Dublin and was shown the fine improvements at Christ Church by the Vicar. The beautiful new pews made a great difference in the appearance as well as the comfort of the congregation. Mr. Ford and I drove to Cochran. Enjoyed a fine supper with the congregation of Trinity Mission. Made an address on the present needs and future plans of the Church.

November 15—At 9 A.M. in Trinity Mission, Cochran, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Vicar. I con tinned 2 presented by Mr. Ford and preached. IIe and I drove to Dublin. At 11:15 in Christ Church Mr. Ford said Morning Prayer and presented 4 for Confirmation. I preached. Had dinner at the Vicarage and drove hard to Dawson for a meeting with Vicar and Vestry of the Mission of the Holy Spirit. Had a quick bite to eat at the Vicarage and drove hard to Bainbridge. Encountered highway delays which threw me forty minutes late getting to St. John’s to begin a Preaching Mission. The Rector and Congregation were patient and we had the first sermon of the Mission.

November 16—At 9:30 A.\L I gave a 15 minute devotional on Radio WMGR. At 10 A.M. in St. John’s Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. At 4 P.M. in St. John’s I conducted a Children’s Mission service. At 5 P.M. engaged in counselling. At 6 P.M. I was guest for supper in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Tonge. At 7:30 P.M. I conducted preaching mission service at St. John’s Church.

November 17—At 7 A.M. in St. John’s, Bainbridge, I celebrated the Holy Communion. At 9:30 I gave a Morning devotion on radio. At 10 A.M. I assisted the Rector in a Celebration of the Holy Communion. Luncheon guest of the Rotary Club and made an address. Made a pastoral call. At 4 P.M. I conducted the Children’s Mission. Engaged in counselling. At 7:30 P.M. conducted Mission Service at St. John’s. Conference with Mr. McGahee of Cairo.

November 18—At 9:30 I gave a radio morning devotion. At 10 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. John’s Church, assisted by the Rector. Had a luncheon conference with Mr. Duncan Burn of Florida. Conducted Children’s Mission at St. John’s. Engaged in counselling. I conducted Mission Service at St. John’s. Met briefly with the Vestry of St. John’s Church.

November 19—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. John’s Church, Bainbridge. At 9 A.M. I attended the Day School Church Service and spoke briefly to the children. Made a radio devotional broadcast and assisted the Rector in the Holy Communion at 10 A.M. A 4 P.M. I conducted the Children’s Mission, engaged in counselling and made a pastoral call. Conducted last service of Preaching Mission, conferred with the Rector and drove as far as Valdosta to spend the night.

November 20—Drove on to Savannah and spent the afternoon in the office with a formidable pile of mail. At 8 P.M. in St. John’s, Savannah, I confirmed 14 presented by the Rev. Ernest Risley.

November 21—Office work. After lunch I drove to Douglas. At St. Andrew’s Church I confirmed 4 presented by Fr. Huff. Drove on to Radium Springs. Had supper with the Vicar and Vestry of St. \Sark’s Mission and then wives. Engaged in pastoral counselling at the Church.

November 22—At 8 A.M. in St. Mark’s Church, Radium Springs, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Vicar. At 9:30 I assisted the Vicar in the Holy Communion, confirmed 15 and received 1 presented by him and preached. This is one of the largest classes I have confirmed at St. Mark’s. The Rev. Harry Shipps and I drove to St. John’s Mission, Albany. There I celebrated the Holy Communion, assisted by Fr. Shipps. I confirmed 3 presented by him and preached. We met with the Vestry following the service. We had lunch at the Vicarage of St. Mark’s Conference with a young man interested in the priesthood. Fr. Shipps and I drove to Pelham. In the Presbyterian Church I celebrated the Holy Communion, assisted by Fr. Shipps, and preached to the Mission of St. Francis. We drove to Albany and after a quick snack at the Vicarage of St. Mark’s, I started for Savannah. Fog and drowsiness determined my stopping in Waycross for the night.

November 23—Drove to Savannah. Office work all afternoon.

November 24—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with a man deeply moved by it conversion experience. Conferences with the Senior Warden of a Mission and the Treasurer of the Diocese. In St. George’s Chapel, I confirmed 2 persons presented by the Rev. Ernest Risley.

November 25—Office work. In the afternoon Mrs. Stuart, Isabelle and I drove to Columbia, S. C. for Thanksgiving as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hayward Clarkson.

November 26—In the late afternoon, we drove to Savannah in time for me to confer with a couple seeking an ecclesiastical judgment under the marriage canon.

November 27—Office work. The work of waterproofing and painting the Diocesan House began. Made a pastoral call.

November 29—At 9 A.M. in St. Matthew’s, Fitzgerald I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Ralph Banks, confirmed 6 presented by him and preached. Attended a reception in the Parish house. Conference with the Vicar. I drove to Swainsboro. At 4 P.M. in the Scout Hut, 1 celebrated the Holy Communion for Coed Shepherd Mission assisted by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz, confined 2 presented by him and baptized 5 children, and preached. Drove to Waynesboro. Conference with the Rev. Van Opdenbrow. At 8 P.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Michael’s Church assisted by Mr. Opdenbrow, baptized Susan Rockwell, and confirmed 2 and preached. Drove to Savannah.

November 30—This being St. Andrew’s Day, I made my Communion at St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Very thankful to receive a grant for church construction from the National Church for Annunication, Vidalia and St. George’s, Savannah. Had a visit at the office from Mr. and Mrs. Sam Waller of Augusta. Mr. Waller, as Historiagrapher of the Diocese, is anxious to see the second floor of Diocesan House made available for the care of our records. We need a gift from someone for this purpose.

December 1—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with Mr. Spencer Connerat.

December 2—Office work. Presided at meeting of the Board of Officers of the Corporation. Conferences with several persons on personal problems.

December 3—Office work. Conference with Fr. Fleming and Mr. Dunham of the Church Insurance Co. Accepted Letter Dimissory of the Rev. Marvin T. Thrasher.

December 4—Office work. Attended briefly a committee meeting at Christ Church, Savannah.

December 5—Office work. In the afternoon 1 drove to Harlem. At 5 P. M. in Trinity Church I said Evening Prayer, confirmed 6 presented by the Vicar, and made a brief address. Conference with Br. Peacock. Drove to Augusta.

December 6—At 9:30 A.M. in Christ Church, Augusta, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Fr. Pritchard, confirmed 8 and received 1 presented by him and preached. Met with fine Adult Bible Class in the parish house. Had dinner in parish house with the congregation. At 5 P.M. in the Church of the Cood Shepherd, Augusta, the Rector said Evening Prayer and I confirmed 22 presented by him and preached At 8 P.M. conducted first service of a preaching mission at St. Albans.

December 7—At 9:30 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Alban’s Church. Spent the remainder of the morning in counselling. At 4 P.I. I conducted the Children’s Mission. Had supper with the Rectory and Vestry and their wives in the parish house. Attended a Vestry meeting. Conducted second service of preaching mission at St. Alban’s.

December 8—At 6 A.M. in St. Alban’s I celebrated the Holy Communion. At 10:30 A.M. I had a conference with the Rev. Chafee Croft. With the Rev. David Pritchard listened to a tape-recording of a speech made lately in Twiggs County on the subject of segregation. Visited Dr. I. E. Washington at Charles Walker School and conferred with him and Mr. Barrington on matters pertaining to St. Mary’s Mission, Augusta. Conducted Children’s Mission at St. Allan’s. Conducted preaching mission service at St. Alban’s.

December 9—At 6 A21. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Alban’s Church. Had a conference all morning with a young man and his problems related to fulfilling a vocation to the priesthood. Conducted Children’s Mission at St. Alban’s. With Fr. Mead visited Mrs. Royall, a parishioner in my first charge in Lauren, S. C. We also make a sick call. Conducted preaching mission in the evening. Conferred with a young man and his wife relative to Seminary training.

December 10—At 9:30 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Alban’s_ Church. Conference with the Rev. Albert Van Opdenbrow. We drove to Thomson and with Fr. Peacock inspected the construction in progress on the Holy Cross Mission. Mr. Van Opdenhrow and I had lunch in Augusta and visited the Good Shepherd Diocesan Book Store. Conducted Children’s Mission at St. Alban’s. Had a brief conference with Mrs. Weeks, Diocesan Altar Guild Chairman. Fr. Peacock and I had supper at the Rectory of St. Alban’s. Conducted closing service for Preaching Mission. I confirmed 14 and received 1 presented by Fr. Plead. Drove to Savannah, arriving shortly after midnight.

December 11—Office work, a visit to the dentist, and a visit to the bank to borrow money for the Conference Center construction.

December 12—I drove to Albany, stopping in Moultrie to see the new rectory of St. John’s and Fr. and Mrs. Murphy, who seemed quite Well settled from their move from Florida to Georgia. At. St. Paul’s I met with the Rectory and Vestry. Had supper at the Rectory where Mrs. Daunt entertained the adult candidates for Confirmation.

December 13—At 8 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Albany, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. At 9:30 A.M. the Rector celebrated the Holy Communion and 1 assisted and preached. We blessed n new Paten at this service. At 11 A.M. Fr. Daunt said Morning Prayer and I confirmed 22 presented by him, one being for St. Thomas, Thomasville. I preached. At. tended a reception in the Parish house and had dinner at the Rectory. Fr. Daunt and I made a hospital call. I drove to Thomasville, stopping in Radium Springs. Made a call in Thomasville and met with Rector and Vestry of St. Thomas’ Church. At 6 P.M. in St. Thomas, the Rector said Evening Prayer and presented 9 for Confirmation. At 7 P.M. I blessed the new Rectory of St. Thomas parish and attended a beautiful reception at the Rectory.

December 14—.Made a brief call in Thomasville and drove to Savannah. Office work. Delighted to hear of a fine gift to the Diocese for Holy Cross Mission, Thomson, by a Methodist layman. Conferences with Mr. Frank Bryson and Fr. Bassill.

December 15—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with the Chancellor.

December 18—Visit to doctor. Office work. Conference with the Rev. Dawson Teague.

December 19—With Air. Francis Dasher, Jr., drove to Brunswick. Attended meeting of the Board of Governors of the Camp and Conference Center, at which Mr. Lucian Whittle presided in parish house of St. Mark’s Church. After the meeting several of us visited the Conference Center site and in speeted the construction progress. I drove to Jesup. With the Rector admired the improvements made on the Church and parish house pf St. Paul’s Parish.

December 20—At 9 A.I. in St. Paul’s, Jesup, the Rev. Peter Fleming celebrated the Holy Communion. I. assisted him, preached, and confirmed 10 presented by him. Attended a reception and made brief remarks on the state of the Church. At 11 A.M. in St. Paul’s, 1 celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Fr. Fleming and preached. Attended a brief Vestry meeting. With the Rector and Building Committee, I inspected the construction of the new Rectory and was impressed with what will he a splendid house. I drove to Savannah. At 5 P.M. in the library of Country Day School, the Rev. Dawson Teague said Evening Prayer. I preached and confirmed 11, received 2 presented by Mr. Teague. This is a fine beginning of Confirmations for St. George’s, our newest Mission. At 7 P.M. in St. Thomas, Isle of Hope I confirmed 8 and received I. presented by the Rev. Edw. Haynsworth and preached.

December 21—This being St. Thomas’ Day and the anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood, I celebrated the I-Ioly Communion in St. Thomas’ Church, isle of Hope at 8 A.M. Office work. Conference with a man concerned about a vocation to Holy Orders. Conference with the Rev. W. Birt Sams.

December 22—At 7 A.N. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with Dr. O’Brien of Savannah Beach. Conference with young man seeking Holy Orders. Conference with Mr. Lucian Whittle. Conference with a newly married couple. Conference with a young lady concerning her vocation. Conference with one of our Postulants and his wife.

December 23—Office work. Conferences with ^1r. and Mrs. Whittle, Fr. Bassill and Mr. Carter, and the Junior Warden of a Parish. In the afternoon in St. George’s Chapel I confirmed 1 for the Holy Apostles presented by the Rev. Albert Hatch.

December 24—We all went to the Midnight Service at St. Paul’s, Savannah. I assisted the Rector.

December 25—Christmas Day once more. At 9:30 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector.

December 26—Had a visit from the Chancellor. In the afternoon I drove to St. Mary’s. Impressed with the fine new Parish House of Christ Church. Had supper there with the Vicar, Mrs. Peoples, and the congregation. Met at some length with Vicar and Vestry.

December 27—At 9 A.M. in Christ Church, St. Mary’s, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Robt. Peeples. I confirmed 2 presented by the Vicar and preached. I drove to Woodbine. At 11 AJ\l. in St. Mark’s Mission, I. assisted the Vicar in the Help Communion, preached and confirmed 1 presented by him. Had dinner with the congregation in the Parish House. Drove to Savannah stopping at Honey Creek to see progress on the construction of the Conference Center.

December 28—Office work. Conferences with Vim. Accles, Postulant, and Sam Edelman, candidate for Holy Orders, Col. deslslet and Mr. Teague from St. George’s Mission.

December 29—At 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah, I celebrated the holy Communion. Office work. In the afternoon I visited Hunter Air Force Base to receive a gift of 75 mattresses for use at the diocesan Camp and Conference Center. This is wonderful help in equipment for us. At his own request, I dropped Mr. Albert Ballinger as a Postulant.

December 30—Office work. Lunch with ASr. Varnedoe, Johnny Mercer, and Fr. Peacock at Oglethorpe Club. Conference with Varnedoe Chisholm. Conference with the Chancellor.

December 31—Made several pastoral calls on Sea Island. I visited Camp and Conference site to see construction progress. The year 1959 ended quietly for the Stuarts and in thanksgiving for all the blessings that have come to us this year.

January 1—We drove to Brunswick for service but found service at St. Mark’s Church had been cancelled. We proceeded on to Savannah. At 5 P.M. Mrs. Stuart and I attended the Blessing of the Home and Reception at the Episcopal Home for Girls.

January 2—Conference with one of our clergy on a personal matter.

January 3—I drove through rain to Brunswick. At 11:15 at St. Athanasius Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Vicar, confirmed 5 presented by him and preached. Fr. Martin and I had a dinner meeting in the parish house with the Vestry. I drove to Darien. At 3 P.M. in St. Cyprian’s Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. T. P. Martin and preached. Drove to Savannah.

January 4—Dental surgery today, which eliminated all else.

January 5—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conferences with the Rev. Hill Sloan, Mr. David Johnson, Fr. Gearhart.

January 6—Today being the Feast of Epiphany, I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. I accepted Mr. Charles Cason of Trinity, Statesboro, as a Postulant.

January 7—Office work. Conferences with the Rev. Edw. Haynsworth and the Rev. Bland Tucker and a man involved in a marital problem.

January 8—Office work. Made a hospital call and a pastoral call. Officated in St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, at the marriage of the Rev. Hill Sloan and Mrs. Agnes Winn.

January 9—Spent most of this day in the study at Bishop’s House. January 10—The Visitations for this Sunday cancelled.

January 11—Office work. I gave Letter Dimissory to the Rev. James Edden to the Diocese of Chicago.

January 12—At 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion. I accepted as a Postulant James E. Foy of Americus. Conferences with architects relative to 3 mission projects.

January 13—At 10:30 in Christ Church, Savannah, I attended Celebration of the Holy Communion on the 40th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of the Rev. F. Bland Tucker and gave him a blessing. Conference with Fr. Hatch on Church in Georgia matters. Conference with Fr. Simkins, retired priest.

January 14—Office work. One of those days when all the mail was had news and we realized we must cut the 1960 Budget.

January 15–Office work.

January 16—Office in the morning. In the afternoon drove to Valdosta. The Rev. Michael Kippenbrock and I were guests of the Men of Christ Church at the country place of Mr. Glen Robinson.

January 17—At 8 A.M. in Christ Church, Valdosta, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. At 9:30 I attended Morning Prayer said by the Rector and made an address. Following the service I spoke briefly to the Adult class of the Church School. At 11 A.M. I confirmed 10 and received 1 presented by Fr. Kippenbrock and preached. In the afternoon Fr. Kippenbrock and I drove to Quitman. At 5 P.M. the Vicar said Evening Prayer at St. James and I preached. Fr. and Mrs. Kippenbrock and I drove to Moultrie. At 8 P.M. in St. John’s Church Fr. Kippenbrock said Evening Prayer unexpectedly and I instituted the Rev. Marvin T. Murphy as second Rector of the parish. The Reverend Fathers Herman Huff, Nelson Daunt, Ben English and Harry Shipps were present and many local visitors. I preached. Attended reception, had conference with Fr. Murphy and drove to Waycross for the night.

January 18—Drove to Savannah. Office work. Conference with one of our Postulants.

January 19—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. I drove to Vidalia where the Mission of the Annunciation is entertaining the Executive Board of the Women of the Diocese. At 11 A.M. in the Community house I celebrated the Holy Communion for the Board, assisted by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz. Attended the Board Meeting through the day and enjoyed the luncheon given by the Annunciation Women. Conference with Mr. Wirtz and drove to Savannah. Attended meeting at St. Michael’s Church regarding the Parish school.

January 20—Conferences at the diocesan office regarding the Camp and Conference Center and securing a new rector for a parish. Conference with the Rev. Charles Schilling of Augusta.

January 21—Sister Josephine of the Order of St. Helena arrived to be a guest at Bishop’s House. Office work.

January 22—Sister Josephine and I drove to Augusta. We consulted with the Rev. Charles Schilling, Dean of the Augusta Convocation, Fr. Mead, and a layman concerning the establishment of a house of the Order in Augusta. We looked at property. I returned to Savannah and Sister Josephine remained as guest of Fr. and Mrs. Mead.

January 23—I drove to Brunswick and picked up Mr. Harold Friedman and we drove to the Camp and Conference Center. We inspected all the construction. The Chapel and dormitory cottages are beginning to look finished. We discussed several matters with Mr. Bob Yeargan, our contractor. Mr. Friedman and I had lunch in Brunswick. I make several calls on St. Simons Island. At 4 P.M. in Christ Church, Frederica, I confirmed 4 presented by Dr. Martin. Conference with the Rev. Ernest Stires, Dr. Martin and I made a call.

January 24 At 8 A.II. in St. Mark’s, Brunswick, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. Fr. Morgan and I had breakfast together. At 9:30 A.M. I attended the family service and made an address. Fr. Morgan and I inspected the new Parish house and visited St. Paul’s Mission, where I spoke briefly to the Church School. At St. Mark’s visited the Adult Bible Class and the Parents Discussion Group. At 11:15 in St. Mark’s, I confirmed 33 and received 1 presented by the Rector and preached. This is a record-breaking class for St. Mark’s. Had lunch with the Senior and Junior Wardens. Drove to Pennick. At 2:15 P.M. in Good Shepherd Mission the Rev. T. P. Martin said Evening Prayer and presented 5 for Confirmation. I preached. Drove to Vidalia stopping in Jesup to see the new Rectory. At 6 P.M. in Community House, Vidalia, I celebrated the Holy Communion for the Mission of Annunciation, assisted by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz who also presented 7 for Confirmation. I preached, met briefly with the congregation and drove to Savannah.

January 25—This being the Conversion of St. Paul, the Apostle, Mrs. Stuart and I made our Communions at St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conference with Fr. Gearhart. Attended canonical examinations briefly of Mr. Wirtz and Mr. Lakeman. Conferences with Fr. Battin. and representatives of Historic Savannah. The Rev. Nelson Daunt is guest at Bishop’s House.

January 26—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Conferences with the Rev. Edmund Lakeman, Fr. Battin, and the Rev. Wm. Worrell. Visited meeting of the Standing Committee. Attending meeting of the Department of Missions and the Division of Camps and Conferences. At 8 P.M. met with Finance Department until after midnight trying to balance 1960 Budget.

January 27—At 10 A.M. I called to order the Executive Council of the Diocese in the Diocesan House. Presided at the meeting until adjournment at 3:45 P.M. with a luncheon recess at Bishop’s House. Conferences with the Rev. John Ford, Mr. Ed Langford, and Mr. Dan Caroll.

January 28—Office work. Conference with a young woman married contrary to the Canons and a Vestryman of a parish. Attended meeting of Board of Episcopal Girl’s Home. Attended annual parish dinner and meeting of Christ Church, Savannah.

January 29—Office work. Conferences with Mr. Body, Mr. Bryson, and a couple from a Mission.

January 30—Spent an hour in the office on financial matters. Drove to Americus. Conference with the Rector of Calvary and went with him on an inspection of the Parish property. Several fine improvements have been made to the physical plant. Conference with a young woman concerning the marriage canon. With Mr. Lakeman and the Rector, I attended a supper meeting of the Vestry and leaders of the parish. I spoke on diocesan matters especially the importance of the missionary quota and Calvary’s responsibility for it. Spent the night at the Rectory.

January 31—At 7:30 I attended the Holy Communion in the Chapel of Calvary Parish at which the Rector celebrated and I gave a simple meditation. At 9:30 A.M. I attended Morning Prayer and made an address. Visited Church School classes and examined the Parish registers. At 11 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector and Mr. Lakeman. I confirmed 19 presented by Fr. Battin. 7 of these Candidates were from St. Jude’s Chapel, parochial Mission of Calvary. I preached. Attended a covered dish luncheon in the Parish house with the congregation. Conference with a couple about the Conference Center. I drove too fast to Cuthbert. The Rev. James Mac Connell said Evening Prayer and I preached in the Church of the Epiphany. At 5 P.M. in Holy Trinity, Blakely, Fr. MacConnell said Evening Prayer and I preached.

February 1—with Fr. MacConnell visited a lawyer on a legal matter, and then inspected the progress of construction on the Church of the Holy Spirit. At long last completion of the building seems in sight. Conferences with several vestrymen of the mission. Drove to Radium Springs for brief visit with Mr. Horace Caldwell who is helping us secure equipment for the Conference Center and has promise of a wonderful gift. Spent an hour in the office. Was cheered by the fine gift through Dr. Tucker for our lagging missionary quota.

February 2—This being the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Michael’s Church, Savannah, assisted by the Rector. This was at the Weekly Eucharist of St. Michael’s Parish School, a very impressive congregation of youngsters. At the office, conferences with a layman concerning summer work at the Conference Center.

February 3—Conference with an architect. Conferences with representatives of St. George’s Mission, Savannah and Fr. Bassil and Mr. Carter. In St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan I-louse confirmed 2 presented by the Rev. F. Bland Tucker

February 4—Office work. Conferences with Mrs. Robert Reid and the Rev. David Pritchard.

February 5—Conference with the Chancellor. Brief visit to the office and then drove to Brunswick for lunch with Mr. Blake Ellis. He and I spent the afternoon inspecting in detail the work progress at the Camp and. Conference Center. Completion is in sight and the achievement is more than satisfactory in appearance at this state. I drove to Douglas and spent the night.

February 6—From Douglas I drove to Cordele. At 10:30 A.M. in Christ Church, Cordele, I ordained to the priesthood the Rev. Edmund Lakeman, presented by the Rev. Robert Battin. The Rev. Nelson Daunt was the preacher and 14 diocesan priests joined me in the laying on of hands. Drove to Douglas and visited at the Vicarage with Fr. and Mrs. Huff. Drove to Waycross and was guest at the Rectory of Grace Church.

February 7—At 8 A.M. in Grace Church, Waycross, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector. At 9:15 A.M. I attended the Family Service, catechised the Children’s Confirmation Class and made a brief address. At 11 A.M. Fr. Warren celebrated the Holy Communion and presented 12 to be confirmed and 1 to be received. I preached. Attended a reception. Confirmed 1 privately at Grace Church presented by the Rector. Examined the Parish registers. At 3 P.M. in St. Ambrose Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Fr. Warren and preached. Visited Mr. and Mrs. Dan Carroll and drove to Savannah.

February 8—Office work. Conference with the Rev. Bruce Wirtz.

February 9—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah. Office work—made some hospital calls.

February 10—Drove to Augusta for meeting with Dept. of Missions and Augusta clergy regarding site of a new Mission in Augusta. Very interesting meeting presided over by the Rev. Allen Clarkson, Chairman of the Department. We finally concluded our business at 4 P.M. I drove to Savannah. Had a quick supper and went to St. Paul’s Luthern Cburch to make an address to the Lutheran Leadership Training School.

February 11—Office work. Learned that the Rev. Porter Ball has resigned St. Paul’s Church, Savannah, to accept work in Puerto Rico. Conference with a couple concerning juvenile delinquency. Visit to the hank and conference with Mr. J. H. Harrison.

February 12—Office work. Conference with Vicar and Councilmen of the Holy Apostles. Conference with one under canonical discipline.

February 13—Office work. Conference with a group of laymen from a mission congregation. Conference with Mr. Ted Atwood, a postulant at University of Georgia.

February 14—At 8 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Michael’s, Savannah, assisted by Fr. Gearhart. At 9:30 A.M. the Rector celebrated and I was present. At 11 A.M. I confirmed 14 and received 2 presented by Fr. Gearhart. I preached. After dinner at home I made a hospital call and drove to Sandersville. In Sandersville I called on Col. John Kimsey recovering from an illness and found the Rev. John Ford there. At 6 P.M. in Grace Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Mr. Ford and preached. Drove to Savannah.

February 15—Office work for a couple of hours and then drove to Brunswick and Camp and Conference Center. Interviewed a possible cook for this summer. Inspected buildings. Drove to Jekyll Island for Clergy Retreat at Crane House. Attended clergy conference that evening.

February 16—At 7:30 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in Crane House, Jekyll Island, beginning Clergy retreat. The Rev. Granville Williams, Superior of S.S.J.E. is Retreat Conductor. Thirty-seven of our clergy are present and 2 from the Diocese of Atlanta.

February 17—In Retreat.

February 18—The Retreat broke this morning. Met with Camp Directors for this summer at the Camp and Conference Center to discuss plans. Fr. Williams and I drove to Woodbine for several conferences. Back on St. Simons I put him on a plane for the North. Very grateful for his work with us in this Retreat. I visited at the Rectory of Christ Church, Frederica and made a call on St. Simons Island. Drove to Savannah.

February 19—Office work. Conferences with Mr. Belford, a Committee in search of a Rector, and Fr. MacConnell. In St. George’s Chapel I confirmed 2 and received 1 presented by Fr. Ball for St. Paul’s, Savannah.

February 20—Office work. Conference with a Church School teacher. In the afternoon I drove to St. Simons Island. Spent the night at the Rectory.

February 21—At 8 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in Christ Church, Frederica, assisted by Dr. Martin. At 10 A.M. I attended the Family Service, spoke briefly to the children and made an address to the adults. At 11:15 I confirmed 16 presented by the Rector and preached. Large congregation. At. 3:30 P.M. Dr. Martin said Evening Prayer in St. Ignatius Mission and I preached. Drove to Savannah to unpack and repack my bag and take the night train to New York.

February 22—Arrived in New York at noon. Had a conference with a priest interested in coming to Georgia.

February 23—At 8 A.M. I made my communion at the House of the Redeemer and attended meeting of the Advisory Council of the Conference on the Religious Life. The Bishop of Northern Indiana and I were the bishops present with the Superiors of various orders. In the afternoon I took a train to New Haven, Conn. Guest of Dean and Mrs. Wilmer of Berkeley Divinity School. At 9 P.M. I gave the first address in a Retreat for the students of the Divinity School.

February 24—At 7:15 I attended the Holy Communion in the Chapel of Berkeley Divinity School. Throughout the day I gave the Retreat addresses and engaged in counselling and administered the Sacrament of Penance. In the afternoon had a pleasant visit from Lawrence Alvarez, Yale student from Christ Church, Valdosta. Gave Letter Dismissory to the Rev. Edward Haynsworth to the Missionary District of Central America.

February 25—At 7:15 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in the Chapel of Berkeley Divinity School ending the Retreat for the students. Mr. Al Decker, Seminarian of the Diocese of Newark drove me across Connecticut to the Convent of St. Helena near Newburgh, N. Y. Had lunch at the Con. vent with the Father Superior of Holy Cross and Fr. Gill. Conference with Fr. Turkington. Had tea with the Sisters and talked with them about the Diocese of Georgia. Conference with the Suffragan Bishop of Capetown, South Africa. Conference with the Sisters relative to the establishment of a House of the Order in Georgia.

February 26—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in the Chapel of the Convent of St. Helena. Sister Clare, who was once my parishoner at the Cathedral in New Orleans, drove me to the bus station to get a bus to New York. In the city I visited the studio of Mr. Glasier and conferred with him relative to the Altar Vessels for the Chapel of our Saviour at our Conference Center. Had Sam Edlemann, our Senior Student at General, as my guest for lunch. Took the train for Savannah.

February 27—Arrived home. ‘ Worked at the accumulated mail in the office and in the study at Bishop’s House.

February 28—At 8 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. John’s, Savannah, assisted by the Rev. Ernest Risley. At 10 A.M. in St. John’s I preached at the Family Service. At 11:30 1 confirmed 43 boys and girls presented by the Rector and preached. Dinner at home and drove to Augusta. At 5 P.M. in St. Paul’s, Augusta, I participated in Acolyte Festival of the Convocation and preached. Fine group of boys were recognized for their service in the Church. Conferences with Wallace Thompson, Postulant, and George hiker, Postulant. Attended meeting of persons interested in forming a new Mission an Wheeler Road at Rectory of St. Paul’s. Spent night at Rectory.

February 29—Drove to Aiken, S. C. At 10 A.M. in St. Thaddeus Church I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rector and began a Quiet Day for the Clergy of Upper South Carolina. Gave the meditations and closed the day with Evening Prayer at 4 P.M. Learned of the death of the Rt. Rev. John D. Wing, retired bishop of South Florida. Conference with Bishop Cole and drove to Savannah.

March 1—At 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s Church I celebrated the Holy Communion. Conferences with Fr. Gearhart and the Chancellor and Fr. Sams.

March 2—This being Ash Wednesday, I said the Pentitential Office and celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Clad to see work of rebuilding the parish house from the fire last year has at last begun. Office work. Conference with Fr. Hatch.

March 3—Office work. Conference with the Rev. Dawson Teague. Attended a meeting of the Standing Committee. Conference with the Senior Warden of a Parish.

March 4—Office work and visit to hospital. Conference with a parish committee in search of a Rector. Conference with a man seeking a judgment under the marriage canon.

March 5—Conference all morning, regarding Camp and Conference Center, with Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Hammatt, who will manage the Center this year, and the Rev. John Ford of the Diocesan Department of Christian Education. Drove to Augusta in the afternoon. With the Rev. and Mrs. Chafee Croft, had supper with leaders of the Church of the Atonement.

March 6—At 9:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Mission, Augusta, I celebrated the Holy Communion and preached. Met briefly with the Mission Council following the sen’ice. At 11:15 in the Church of the Atonement, Augusta, I witnessed Baptisms by the Vicar, confirmed 8 presented by him, celebrated the Holy Communion and preached. With the Vicar made a sick call. Drove to Savannah.

March 7—Worked hard and fast all morning in the office to clear up as much as possible before leaving for Lenten preaching engagement in Texas Took afternoon plane to Atlanta and thence to Dallas.

March 9—I preached at the noonday service in St. David’s, Austin. Had lunch with the Austin Clarions and made an informal address.

March 10—At 10 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Austin, assisted by the Rev. Sam Baxter. At noonday I preached in St. David’s, Austin.

March 11—Preached at Noonday service in St. David’s. Took a plane to Dallas and thence to Atlanta.

March 12—Spent the morning in the office with a pile of mail and Long distance calls. Afternoon in study at home.

March 13-1 drove to Dawson. At 3 P.M. I officiated at the opening of the new church of the Mission of the Holy Spirit, dedicated the Font and preached. The construction of the building, long delayed, was brought to completion under the leadership of Fr. MacConnell and Mr. Jack Duskin. A large congregation was present and many clergy of the Albany Convocation and nearby points participated in the procession and service. Made a pastoral call. Met briefly with Mission Council and Vicar. Fr. Daunt and I drove to Albany. At 7 P.M. in St. Paul’s, Albany, the Rector said Evening Prayer and presented 5 for Confirmation. I preached.

March 14—At 7 A.M. I attended a breakfast meeting of the Rector and Vestry of St. Paul’s, Albany. At 9 A.M. I met with a special committee cancerned with establishing a new mission iu Albany and visited with them two likely sites. In the interest of securing one of these sites had a conference with a property owner. Fr. Daunt and I visited Mr. Gene Broadwell to discuss Camp equipment. I drove all afternoon to Augusta. At 5 P.M. in the Church of the Good Shepherd the Rev. Allen Clarkson said Evening Prayer and presented I to be received from the Roman Communion. Conference with Mr. Clarkson. At 8 P.M. I made an address at St. Paul’s, Augusta, to special meeting sponsored by the Women of the Church. Conference with Mr. Fargo.

March 15—Drove to Savannah. Office work. Conference with a man concerning his vocation. Conference with Mr. Preston East, Senior Warden of St. Thomas’ Church, Isle of 1-lope.

March 16—Office work. Conference with the Rev. St. Julian Simpkins. Drove to Macon. At 8 P.M. I preached at Lenten Service of Christ Church, Macon.

March 17—Drove from Macon to Sylvania. Attended bearing of the legislative Study Commission on the school problem. Drove to Savannah. Office work. Conference with a young lady, her finance, and her mother. Conference with the Chancellor settling the acquisition of property for St. George’s Mission, Savannah, made possible by a wonderful gift of Christ Church, Savannah. Gave Letter Dismissory to the Rev. Porter Ball to the Missionary District of Puerto Rico.

March 18—Office work. Conferences with Fr. Ball, a young man trying to decide his vocation, a doctor with a difficult personal problem.

March 19—Office. Conferences with a Negro teacher regarding a vocation to the priesthood, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Carroll of Waycross. Afternoon in the study at home. At 6 P.M. at All Saints, the Rev. Wm. Bassill celebrated the Holy Communion commemorating his 35th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. I confirmed 1 presented by him, assisted him in the celezration, blessed a new pulpit, lectern, litany desk and several new Altar appointments. In addition to these gifts, the people of the Mission have made fine improvements to the building.

March 20—At 8 A.M. in Christ Church, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. F. Bland Tucker, the Rev. Tom Hastings, and the Rev. Dawson Teague. At 11:30 I confirmed 30 and received 2 presented by Dr. Tucker and preached. I drove to Burroughs. At 3 P.M. in St. Bartholomew’s Mission I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by the Rev. Gustave Caution, confirmed 2 presented by him and preached. In the evening Mrs. Stuart, Isabelle, and I attended farewell reception for Fr. and Mrs. Ball who leave this week for work in Puerto Rico.

March 21—Not very well today. Spent most of the day at home. Conferences in the office with a delegation from a Mission congregation, and with a priest concerning work in this diocese.

March 22—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with the Mayor of Savannah.

March 23—Office work. Presided at meeting of the Board of Officers of the Corporation. Visit from Dr. Tucker and the Rev. Tom Blair of North Carolina.

March 24—Office work. Visit front Fr. Fleming, Secretary of the Diocese.

March 25—\fade hospital call. Office work. Attended noonday service at Christ Church. Conference with Col. des Islets regarding St. George’s Mission. Conference with Mr. Harrison at the C. & S. Bank. In St. George’s Chapel, Diocesan House, confirmed 2 presented by the Rev. John Wooley.

March 26—Conference with a delegation from one of our Mission congregations. In the afternoon I drove to Reidsville. At 3 P.M. in the Chapel of State Prison, I confirmed 1 and received 1 presented by the Rev. Bruce Wirtz. Celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by him and made a brief address. Conference with Mr. Wirtz. Drove to Thomasville.

March 27—At 8 A.M. in St. Thomas’ Church, Thomasville, I celebrated the Holy Communion. At 10 A.M. in St. Thomas’ Church the Rector said Morning Prayer and presented 21 for Confirmation and 2 to be received. I preached. inspected Parish records and property. Conference with a couple interested in an ecclesiastical judgment under the Marriage Canon. Fr. English and Mr. T. R. Catchings said Evening Prayer at Good Shepherd Mission at 7:30 and presented 11 for confirmation. This is a record class at this Mission. I preached

March 28—I drove to Savannah. All afternoon in the office.

March 29—At 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah. Attended meeting of the Savannah Clericus at the Church of the Holy Apostles. Conference with the Architect of St. George’s Mission, Savannah. Visit from ^’ir. Richard Suddath of Jacksonville. Learned with thankfulness that the Diocese is to receive a bequest from estate of Miss Carolina Woodbridge. Learned that the Vestry of St. Thomas’, Isle of Hope, has called the Rev. John Ford.

March 30—Office. Visit from the Rev. George Goss of Tennessee. Conference with Mr. Frank Howden, Jr. Conference with Mr. Preston East, Senior Warden of St. Thomas’ Parish, Isle of Hope. At 8 P.M. in the Chapel of St. John’s Church, Savannah, I confirmed 12 presented by the Rev. Ernest Risley.

March 31—Office work. Conference with Mr. Carl Page regarding laymen’s work.

April 1—Office work. Conference with Committee of St. Paul’s, Savannah, concerning new rector. Conference at the bank with Mr. J. H. Harrison and the Chancellor. Conference with the Rev. John Ford. I drove to Augusta and spent the night at the Rectory of St. Paul’s.

April 2—At 10:30 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Augusta, we ordained to the Sacred Priesthood the Rev. W. Bruce Wirtz. The Rev. Edward Holtam of Alabama preached the sermon and the Rev. Charles Schilling presented the Candidate. Many diocesan clergy were present and participated. Conference with several clergy. Drove to Savannah. Learned with pleasure that the Rev. John Ford has accepted the call of St. Thomas’ Church, Isle of Hope, to become the Rector of the Parish.

April 3—At 9:30 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion, confirmed 7 presented by Mr. Jas. Head, Senior Warden and preached. Met briefly with the Vestry following the service. At 4 P.M. in between April showers, officiated at ground-breaking for parish house of St. George’s Mission, Windsor Forest. The Rev. Bland Tucker, Canon Harris, Fr. Hatch, and the Vicar, the Rev. Dawson Teague, participated in the service with Col. John des Islets, Senior Warden, and myself. I drove to Fort Stewart. At 7:30 P.M. in the Post Chapel the Rev. W. B. Sams said Evening Prayer and presented 2 for Confirmation. I preached.

April 4—Office work. Conference with a layman from a Mission. Learned of serious illness of Mrs. Middleton Barnwell in Syracuse. Conference with a young woman concerning the Marriage Canon. Made a pastoral call.

April 5—At 7 A.M. celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah. Made a hospital call. Conferences with Fr. Hatch and Fr. Gearhart.

April 6—I drove to Spartanburg, S. C. At the Church of the Advent I preached at the Noonday Lenten service.

April 7—Office work. Gave consent to the consecration of the Rev. Thomas A. Fraser, Jr., as Bishop Coadjutor of North Carolina. Learned of the acceptance of the call to St. Mary’s, Augusta, by the Rev. Turner Morris.

April 8—Office work. At noon I drove to the Conference Center. Glad to find Mr. and Mrs. Hammatt settled in the Manager’s Cottage. With the•Architect and Mr. H. L. Friedman made an inspection of the nearly com-

pleted construction. It is a beautiful center for which we can all give thanks. Drove to St. Simons Island. At Christ Church, Frederica, I confirmed 4 presented by the Rector.

April 9—Drove to Conference Center. At 10 A.M. attended meeting of Board of Managers of Conference Center. Drove to Savannah. Drove to Augusta.

April 10—At 8 A.M. this Palm Sunday I celebrated the Holy Communion at St. Paul’s Church, assisted by the Rev. Charles Schilling. At 9:45 I assisted the Rector in a celebration of the Holy Communion. At 11:15 I confirmed 16 and received I presented by Fr. Schilling. I preached. At 8 P. M. in St. Matthew’s, Savannah, I confirmed 21 and received 1 presented by the Rev. Gustave Caution. The Rev. St. Julian Simpkins participated in the service. I preached.

April 11—On this Monday in Holy Week I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah, at 7 A.M. Learned of the death of Margaret Barnwell, widow of Bishop Barnwell, in Syracuse this morning. Conference with Fr. Caution. At 5:30 p.m. in St. George’s Chapel I confirmed 6 presented by Fr. Gearhart for St. Michael’s, Savannah.

April 12—Celebrated the Holy Communion at 7 A.M. in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Office work. Conference with the Chancellor. Conference with Mr. Wilson Mason, Chairman of the Finance Department of the Diocese.

April 13—At. 7 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah. Visit from a layman from Long Island. Participated in Memorial Service for Margaret Barmvell at Christ Church, Savannah. Conferences with Mrs. Brannen, Fr. Huff and Mr. Holton of Douglas.

April 14—This Maundy Thursday I celebrated the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s, Savannah, at 7 A.M. At 10 A.M. in St. Paul’s I celebrated again and blessed the oil for use in the Diocese in Holy Unction. At the office had conferences with a young man concerning the ministry, with the executor of an estate, with the Rev. Dawson Teague, with the committee of St. Paul’s, Savannah seeking a new Rector. At 5:30 in St. George’s Chapel I confirmed I presented by Fr. Caution.

April 15—At 7 A.M. this Good Friday, I officiated in St. Paul’s Church, Savannah, at the Good Friday Liturgy. At 12 noon Fr. Hatch of Holy Apostles, Savannah, and I jointly conducted a Three Hour Service at St. Paul’s, Savannah, and shared the meditations on the Passion.

April 20—At 10 A.M. in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal Home for Girls, I celebrated the Holy Communion for the Board of the Home. Office work. Conference with Mr. Wm. Gaillard. In the afternoon I attended a tea at the Episcopal Home for Girls and presided at the Annual Meeting of the Board and friends of the Home. Made some hospital calls.

April 21—I took an early plane for Atlanta. At 10 A.M. in St. Luke’s Parish House I called to order a meeting of the Provincial Department of Christian Education and presided over the sessions until adjournment at 3 P.M.

April 22—Office work. Visits from Fr. Fleming and Fr. Wooley. Conference at the bank with reference to the loan for Conference Center construction. Conference with Fr. Peacock. The Rev. Ben English is guest at Bishop’s IIouse. He and I attended opening session of diocesan Young Churchmen Convention at Christ Church Parish House. Fr. Gearhart made the address. Splendid attendance.

April 23—At 8 A.M. in Christ Church, Savannah, I celebrated the Holy Communion for the Young Churchmen Convention assisted by the Rev. Tom Hastings, the Rev. Ben English and the Rev. Joe Peacock. Had breakfast with the Convention. Conference with the Rev. Wm. Worrell. Attended session of Young Churchmen Convention and made an address. Drove in the afternoon to Tifton. Had supper with the congregation of St. Anne’s on the Church grounds. Met with the Rector and Vestry, and visited informally with the Rector discussing many matters.

April 24—At 8 A.M. in St. Anne’s, Tifton, I celebrated the Holy Communion assisted by Fr. Clark. Visited Church School classes and inspected parish records. At 11 A.M. I celebrated the Holy Communion, confirmed 9 presented by the Rector and preached. Drove to Cordele. In Christ Church, Fr. Lakeman said Evening Prayer and presented 12 for Confirmation (5 for Christ Church and 7 for St. Jude’s) and I preached. Drove to Albany. At 7 P.M. in St. Paul’s Church the Rector and Fr. Shipps said Evening Prayer. I confirmed 3 presented by Fr. Daunt, 4. presented by Fr. Shipps and received 1. At St. John’s Mission I confirmed 1 presented by Fr. Shipps. The Daunts, Fr. Shipps, and I visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frances Weatherby. I spent the night at the Rectory of St. Paul’s Parish.

April 25—Conference with Fr. Shipps. Attended St. Mark’s Day celebration of the Holy Communion in St. Paul’s Church, Albany. Drove to Moultrie. Conference with Fr. Kippenbrock. Drove to Thomasville. At Good Shepherd Mission confirmed 1 presented by the Rev. Ben English and Mr. T. R. Catchings. Met briefly with Mission Council. Confirmed 1 at St. Thomas Church presented by the Rector. Attended Men’s Club supper in the Parish house and spoke informally on several matters with the men.

April 26—I drove to Jesup. Attended meeting of Women of Brunswick Convocation and made an address at St. Paul’s Church. Visited with Fr. Fleming the beautiful new Rectory of the Parish. Drove to Savannah. Office work all afternoon.

April 27—Office work. Learned of the hospitilization of Canon Harris for a broken hip. Conference with Mrs. Wynne. Made a hospital call and a pastoral call.

April 28–Conference with a couple in marital difficulty. Office work. Conference with U. S. Engineers regarding use of Government Chapel.

April 29—Had a conference with the Rev. Dawson Teague. Made a hospital call. In the afternoon I drove to the Conference Center. Attended a meeting of the Finance Department of the Diocese. This is the first official use of the new Conference Center. It seems appropriate for the Finance Department to be the first in the Diocese to use the Center.

April 30—At 11 A.M. we formally opened the Conference Center and dedicated it in memory of Bishop Reese. We consecrated the Chapel of our Saviour in memory of Bishop Barnwell. The Rt. Rev. Hamilton West, Bishop of Florida preached the sermon. Most of the clergy of the Diocese were present and some three or four hundred people. It was a beautiful day and one for which we are all so thankful in that once more we have a Conference Center. Everyone had a picnic lunch and admired the work of the architect and the contractor. I drove to Thomasville and spent the night.
